Getting Started
How do I install FreelanceDesk?
Install FreelanceDesk for free from the Chrome Web Store. Once installed, open a new tab to access your dashboard, or click the extension icon in your toolbar to get started.
How do I create my first document?
Open the dashboard (new tab), click any document type (Invoice, Quote, Proposal, Contract, or NDA), fill in the form on the left, and watch the live preview update on the right. Click the download button to get a PDF, or save it to your documents.
What Chrome version do I need?
Chrome 114 or newer (released June 2023). FreelanceDesk uses Manifest V3, Chrome's latest extension platform.
Free vs Pro
What's included in the free tier?
The free tier includes all 5 document types (invoices, quotes, proposals, contracts, NDAs), up to 15 documents, 5 clients, 3 template styles per document type, client management, dashboard, encrypted local storage, and manual JSON backup.
What does Pro add?
Pro unlocks unlimited documents, clients, and templates (all 45 across 9 styles), Brand Kit (logo, colors, fonts on every document), custom template editor, and encrypted backups with password protection. It's a one-time $49 payment, no subscription.
Can I still view existing documents after hitting the free limit?
Yes. You can always view, edit, and download documents you've already created. The limit only applies to creating new documents.
License & Payment
How do I activate my Pro license?
After purchasing, you'll receive a license key from Polar (on the receipt page and by email). Open the extension, go to Settings → License tab, paste your key, and click Activate. See our step-by-step setup guide for the full walkthrough.
Can I use my license on multiple computers?
Your license can be activated on up to 3 devices. If you need to move it, deactivate on the old device first (Settings → License → Deactivate), then activate on the new one.
What if I'm offline?
FreelanceDesk works fully offline. License validation happens every 7 days in the background with a 30-day grace period. You can create and edit documents without an internet connection.
Documents
How do I download a PDF?
Click the download/print button in the preview panel. This opens your browser's print dialog, then select “Save as PDF” as the destination to save the file.
Can I change the template after creating a document?
Yes. When editing a saved document, use the template dropdown at the top to switch styles. Your content stays the same, only the design changes.
What document types are supported?
Invoices, quotes, proposals, contracts, and NDAs. Each type has 9 template styles to choose from (45 templates total).
Data & Privacy
Where is my data stored?
Everything is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB with AES-256 encryption. Your data never leaves your device. We have no servers that store your documents, clients, or business data.
How do I back up my data?
Go to Settings → Data Backup → Export All Data. You can download a plain JSON file or an encrypted backup with a password. Import on any machine using the same page.
What happens if I uninstall the extension?
Uninstalling removes all locally stored data. We strongly recommend exporting a backup before uninstalling. Once deleted, your data cannot be recovered. We don't have a copy.
Troubleshooting
The extension isn't loading or looks broken
Try these steps: (1) Close and reopen the new tab. (2) Disable and re-enable the extension in chrome://extensions. (3) Check that you're on Chrome 114 or newer. (4) If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall the extension (back up your data first).
My license key isn't working
Make sure you're copying the full key with no extra spaces. Check your internet connection, since activation requires a one-time server call. If you've already activated on 3 devices, you'll need to deactivate one first. Still stuck? Email us at therailabs@gmail.com with your license key and we'll help.
PDF output looks different from the preview
When printing to PDF, make sure “Background graphics” is checked in the print dialog, and margins are set to “None” or “Minimum” for the best result.
