Billing Tips for UX Designers
Milestone billing works best for UX projects because each phase produces tangible deliverables. Structure payments around research completion, wireframe delivery, prototype approval, and testing report. This gives the client clear checkpoints and protects your cash flow better than billing everything at the end.
Always include a revision limit in your contract and quote. UX design is iterative by nature, and without explicit limits, clients will request endless tweaks during every phase. Two to three revision rounds per phase is standard. Charge hourly for additional rounds beyond the included limit.
Bill user research participant incentives as a separate pass-through line item. Recruiting and compensating interview or testing participants is a real project cost, not part of your design fee. Clearly separating these costs prevents disputes and shows the client exactly where their research budget goes.
Charge for design system documentation and developer handoff as a distinct phase.
